"La Taverna is a very friendly Italian Restaurant situated in Meadowhead. Ferdinando is a brilliant host and the food is of a very high standard. The restaurant is tucked away but is best known as 'The one next to Mitchells'. Make sure you do find it because it will be worth your while."

"Ferdinando's at meadowhead... one word superb.."
"What makes some dishes stand out from the rest? The secret is often in the sauce. I dined with my wife at Ferdinando, Meadowhead, and although we thoroughly enjoyed the feature ingredients of our meals, we both left drooling about two particularly tasty sauces.
Ferdinando has been installed at Meadowhead for almost three years and the cosy venue has his jovial Italian personality stamped all over it. Many food fans who know when they are on to a good think come back here week after week and are warmly greeted like family members. Indeed; Ferdi quickly pointed out one man eating at a table close to ours who had been his very first diner in 2003.
So many restaurants are happy to put any old dish on their 'specials' blackboard just to fill it up. Specials at Ferdinandos are very special indeed. Dishes on the regular menu are pretty impressive too with a mixture of Italian favourites and other more imaginative creations. Wine is offered but you're just as well calling in at the neighbours - Mitchells - for a bottle or two and paying the corkage charge.
I was so taken by my own starter that I didn't take my eyes away from it and hardly noticed my wife's appetiser. She later told me she had found her Asparagus with Brie and Parmesan (£5.95) to be full of flavour but I'm sure it didn't go close to matching the flavour of my four huge Mediterranean Prawns (£7.25). Presented in a swirl on my plate, they were particularly fresh and meaty but it was the sauce of ginger, spring onion, garlic, butter and white wine which turned the dish into a spectacular one. Fortunately there was bread too and I didn't fail to mop up a single drop.
Across the table my wife's Pollo Alle Castagne (£10.95) had been selected from the 'specials' listing and it lived up to its billing with every mouthful being thoroughly enjoyed. My own Bistecca Diana (£12.95) featered a thick and tender steak presented with another winning sauce prepared with onions, mushrooms, cream and brandy. We shared a portion of healthy vegetables.
Replete, we just couldn't manage another mouthful so never got to sample deserts.
A thouroughly enjoyable experience at one of Sheffield's friendliest restaurants. Judging by the happy chatter from other diners we were not alone in our views."
